We recommend booking your camping reservations well in advance, especially at popular spots like Hosmer Grove, Camp Olowalu, Wai'anapanapa State Park, Kipahulu State Park, and Papalaua Wayside. Yes, camping restrictions are in place across Maui. Permits are required for all campsites and must be obtained in advance since onsite issuance is not available. Camping is allowed only in designated areas; "boondocking" or free camping is illegal and discouraged by locals. In state parks, vehicle camping is generally prohibited, except at a designated area in Wai'anapanapa State Park. 

Private campgrounds like Camp Olowalu offer amenities but still require reservations. Local laws also prohibit camping on public beaches and spaces. We advise following "leave no trace" principles and adhering to both rental company and local regulations for a safe and responsible visit.
